Plea to work together for better fire safety

A lack of central Government coordination for central fire safety means that the fire safety sector must develop its own policies and standards according to an article by the online safety website, www.info4fire.com .

It says that all parties need to work together in fire safety management including in the design and build of new structures and ongoing fire safety management.  The plea has come from the chair of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection.

London in hot water over fire safety breaches

Lambeth Council in London have received a number of fire safety enforcement notices after a range of premises were inspected for fire safety standards including school, social housing etc.

Some of the council’s main failings included failures to:

Light emergency exits

Provide staff with relevant fire safety training

Ensure that adequate fire safety measures were in place

It was also noted that fire risk assessements must be carried out.

For all public buildings in England a fire risk assessment must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the regulatory refom (fire safety) order 2005.  A fire risk assessment should be carried out by a trained and competent person and ensure that workplace and public buildings have adequate fire safety prevention measures such as fire safety equipment (fire extinguishers) and that staff have received fire safety training and that good housekeeping takes place i.e. the keeping clear of emergency exits etc.  You can find more details about fire risk assessments on our website at www.firemart.co.uk

Never use hot water bottles in beds that have electric blankets

Make sure that any open fires are fitted with guards and that the guards are used

Switch off electrical items before retiring for the night

Make sure that heating is kept away from any flammable materials such as such materials, curtains, furniture etc

You may also wish to ensure that you have a working smoke alarm and a small fire extinguisher or fire blanket
